How is net salary calculated in Sri Lanka?
In Sri Lanka, net salary is calculated by subtracting social security contributions (EPF (Employees Provident Fund)) and income tax (APIT (Personal Income Tax) 2023) from the annual gross salary.
APIT (Personal Income Tax) 2023 uses a progressive scale. Rates range from 0 % for the lowest incomes to 36 % for the highest. Only the portion of income that falls within each bracket is taxed at that rate, never the full salary.
EPF (Employees Provident Fund) contributions amount to approximately 8 % of gross salary, funding the pension, healthcare and other social benefits available to employees in Sri Lanka.
This calculator uses official data from Inland Revenue Dept. Sri Lanka (ird.gov.lk) for 2026. Results are indicative; for exact calculations or specific situations (personal deductions, special regimes) consult a tax adviser or the country's tax authority.
Employee contributes 8% to EPF; employer contributes 12%. The tax system was drastically reformed in 2023 as part of the IMF economic adjustment programme. Personal allowance is Rs 1,200,000/year.
