How is net salary calculated in South Africa?
In South Africa, net salary is calculated by subtracting social security contributions (UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund)) and income tax (PAYE (Income Tax, SARS) 2024/25) from the annual gross salary.
PAYE (Income Tax, SARS) 2024/25 uses a progressive scale. Rates range from 18 % for the lowest incomes to 45 % for the highest. Only the portion of income that falls within each bracket is taxed at that rate, never the full salary.
UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) contributions amount to approximately 1 % of gross salary, funding the pension, healthcare and other social benefits available to employees in South Africa.
This calculator uses official data from South African Revenue Service (sars.gov.za) for 2026. Results are indicative; for exact calculations or specific situations (personal deductions, special regimes) consult a tax adviser or the country's tax authority.
The primary rebate is ZAR 17,235/year (2024/25), equivalent to effectively exempting approximately the first ZAR 95,750 of income at the 18% rate. The employee contributes 1% to the UIF (unemployment and maternity), capped at ZAR 177.12/month. The secondary and tertiary rebates for persons over 65 and 75 are not included in this calculator.
