How is net salary calculated in Japan?
In Japan, net salary is calculated by subtracting social security contributions (Shakai hoken (social insurance)) and income tax (Income tax (national + inhabitant)) from the annual gross salary.
Income tax (national + inhabitant) uses a progressive scale. Rates range from 15 % for the lowest incomes to 55 % for the highest. Only the portion of income that falls within each bracket is taxed at that rate, never the full salary.
Shakai hoken (social insurance) contributions amount to approximately 14,75 % of gross salary, funding the pension, healthcare and other social benefits available to employees in Japan.
This calculator uses official data from National Tax Agency Japan (nta.go.jp) for 2026. Results are indicative; for exact calculations or specific situations (personal deductions, special regimes) consult a tax adviser or the country's tax authority.
Employee contributions: kōsei nenkin pension (9.15%), kenkō hoken health (~5%, varies by prefecture) and koyō hoken employment (0.6%). Tax rate combines national income tax and jūminzei local tax (~10%). Simplified; actual tax varies with deductions.
