How is the electricity bill calculated in Germany?

In Germany the bill has two main components: the Grundpreis (annual base price, ~120.0 โ‚ฌ/year) covering fixed network costs, and the Arbeitspreis (working price, 0.35 โ‚ฌ/kWh) for actual consumption. MwSt at 19% is applied on the total.

How is electricity billed in other countries?

Electricity prices and billing structures vary widely by country. In central Europe, consumers pay an annual base price (Grundpreis) plus a per-kWh working price. Nordic countries buy energy at the Nordpool spot price. France and Italy use a contracted power subscription. And in many countries across Asia, Latin America and Africa, progressive tiers by consumption apply, often with government subsidies.
