Electricity prices in the Dominican Republic (2026): residential tariff BTS-1
In the Dominican Republic a kWh costs between RD$6.05 and RD$13.09 depending on how much you use in the month. The residential tariff BTS-1 has been frozen since April 2022 and is subsidised by the state. Here are the official blocks and a calculator to estimate your bill.

BTS-1 tariff in force in 2026
BTS-1 is the low-voltage tariff for homes with a connected load below 10 kW. It works by blocks: each slice of monthly consumption is charged at its own price, with one important exception above 700 kWh.
| Consumption block (month) | Price |
|---|---|
| 0 – 200 kWh | 6.05 RD$/kWh |
| 200 – 300 kWh | 8.59 RD$/kWh |
| 300 – 700 kWh | 12.89 RD$/kWh |
| Above 700 kWh: all consumption at this price | 13.09 RD$/kWh |
- Fixed charge: RD$42.10 a month up to 100 kWh; RD$128.59 above 100 kWh.
- ITBIS (VAT): according to unofficial calculators, the 18% rate applies only to residential bills above 700 kWh a month. We could not confirm this with the tax authority (DGII), so the calculator does not include it.
How much is a monthly electricity bill in the Dominican Republic?
Estimated monthly bills using Edesur's applied tariff (October 2026), excluding ITBIS:
| Monthly consumption | Bill (month) | Per month | Average per kWh |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 kWh | RD$ 647.10 | RD$ 647.10 | 6.47 RD$/kWh |
| 200 kWh | RD$ 1,338.59 | RD$ 1,338.59 | 6.69 RD$/kWh |
| 300 kWh | RD$ 2,197.59 | RD$ 2,197.59 | 7.33 RD$/kWh |
| 500 kWh | RD$ 4,775.59 | RD$ 4,775.59 | 9.55 RD$/kWh |
| 700 kWh | RD$ 7,353.59 | RD$ 7,353.59 | 10.51 RD$/kWh |
| 750 kWh | RD$ 9,946.09 | RD$ 9,946.09 | 13.26 RD$/kWh |
The 700 kWh jump
Up to 700 kWh a month, each block is charged at its own price: the first 200 kWh at RD$6.05, 201–300 kWh at RD$8.59 and 301–700 kWh at RD$12.89. But if monthly consumption exceeds 700 kWh, all of it is billed at RD$13.09, not just the excess.
That is why 700 kWh cost RD$7,353.59 while 701 kWh cost about RD$9,304.68: almost two thousand pesos more for a single extra kWh. If you are close to the limit, controlling air conditioning near the end of the billing cycle makes a big difference.
A frozen, subsidised tariff
BTS-1 prices rose gradually between November 2021 and April 2022 under the Electricity Pact (the first block went from RD$4.44 to RD$6.05) and have not changed since. In October 2026 the government confirmed the tariff remains frozen.
The real cost of supply is higher: the Ministry of Energy and Mines puts the reference tariff at around RD$15.50/kWh, and the state expects to spend about RD$100,000 million on the electricity subsidy in 2026. The Bono Luz programme (Supérate) also helps around 617,000 families with their bill.
Edesur, Edenorte and Edeeste
Three distributors serve the country: Edesur, Edenorte and Edeeste. The Superintendencia de Electricidad (SIE) sets the tariffs and all three apply the same residential tariff. The figures on this page come from Edesur's official October 2026 schedule, identical in every monthly schedule published since April 2022.
