How to compare electricity tariffs in Spain
The electricity bill has many components and comparing tariffs is not easy. Here are the keys to choosing well and paying less.
Regulated (PVPC) vs. free market
The PVPC is the regulated tariff: its price changes every hour with the wholesale market. The free-market tariff offers a fixed price agreed with the retailer — more stability, but less room to save during cheap hours.
The P1, P2 and P3 time bands
Since the network-charge reform, power and energy are split into three periods:
| Band | Hours (weekdays) | Price |
|---|---|---|
| P1 Peak | 10–14 h and 18–22 h | Most expensive |
| P2 Mid | 8–10, 14–18, 22–24 h | Medium |
| P3 Off-peak | 0–8 h and weekends | Cheapest |
Tips to pay less
- Run the washing machine, dishwasher and car charging during off-peak hours.
- Match your contracted power to what you actually need.
- Compare both the kWh price and the fixed charge, not just one.
Compare your consumption cost by tariff and time band.
