How to compare electricity tariffs in Spain

The electricity bill has many components and comparing tariffs is not easy. Here are the keys to choosing well and paying less.

Regulated (PVPC) vs. free market

The PVPC is the regulated tariff: its price changes every hour with the wholesale market. The free-market tariff offers a fixed price agreed with the retailer — more stability, but less room to save during cheap hours.

The P1, P2 and P3 time bands

Since the network-charge reform, power and energy are split into three periods:

BandHours (weekdays)Price
P1 Peak10–14 h and 18–22 hMost expensive
P2 Mid8–10, 14–18, 22–24 hMedium
P3 Off-peak0–8 h and weekendsCheapest
